The Supermarket Price Comparator is a smart web application designed to help users find the best deals across major UK supermarkets. Built with Next.js and powered by Firebase, it allows users to search for products by name and instantly compare prices, nutritional information, and value metrics such as price-per-protein or price-per-gram.
The app’s goal is to simplify food budgeting and healthy shopping by combining cost and nutrition into one unified view. Users can see at a glance which store offers the most cost-effective or nutritious option for their chosen items — whether they’re looking for high-protein foods, better macros, or just the best deals on everyday essentials.
In future iterations, the platform will include:
- Commonly bought items, showing where the UK’s most-searched groceries are cheapest this week.
- A personal favourites list, where users can track preferred products and receive updates when they drop in price.
- A basket comparison view, allowing users to see how much they could save by mixing purchases between different supermarkets rather than buying everything from one.
Initially focused on Sainsbury’s and Tesco, the app’s backend will later expand to include Asda, Morrisons, Lidl, and Aldi, using a combination of scraping and (where available) API integrations.
Ultimately, the Supermarket Price Comparator aims to be more than just a shopping tool — it’s a data-driven platform that helps consumers make smarter, healthier, and more economical decisions in an increasingly complex retail landscape.
