LiveGrid GB

A real-time national grid tracker, looking at the energy usage of Great Britain.

LiveGrid GB will be designed to provide a comprehensive real-time overview of Britain's national energy grid. The app will visualize where our electricity comes from by breaking down current energy generation data by source, including nuclear, offshore wind, onshore wind, solar, gas, coal, hydro, and biomass. This will allow users to see not only how much each energy source is contributing at any given moment, but also to track trends and changes over time.

Beyond generation, LiveGrid GB will also present data on overall electricity demand across the country, as well as information about electricity imports and exports to and from neighbouring countries. A key feature will be the display of carbon intensity, which measures the environmental impact of power generation at any given time—helping users understand how green the grid is.

Additionally, the app will highlight data on curtailments, constraints, and outages — these represent portions of available energy that can’t be used due to various technical, economic, or grid capacity reasons. By surfacing this data, LiveGrid GB will aim to increase public awareness of the challenges and complexities involved in balancing supply and demand, integrating renewable sources, and maintaining grid stability. This information is not only valuable for individuals interested in sustainability, but also for researchers, policymakers, and anyone curious about how Britain is transitioning toward a greener and more resilient energy future.
